GREGORIAN INTERVIEW [December 23rd 2001] IN 30 TON LISTA LISTA PRZEBOJÓW (Top 30 Hit Songs – a popular music program)

“Hi, I’m Frank Peterson… I’m the producer of the Masters Of Chant albums by Gregorian”.

“Hello, I’m David Tilley, one of the 12 singers that make up the Gregorian Choir. I’m afraid I can’t say the name of this program…30 Ton…oh well, you know the name of this show!”

Gregorian means teamwork
Everyone here in Gregorian is part of a team. The whole project is based on the combined creativity of a devoted group of people. Working together, you can feel lots of positive vibrations in the air. That is really wonderful and I think everybody should experience it… The production of our albums is a multi-level task. It all begins with synthesizers and the concept for an arrangement, afterwards some sounds are replaced by real instruments – we record the percussion, bass, guitar, and even the whole orchestra! But the most wonderous moment is when twelve, fifty or even a hundred singers walk into the studio and start singing at the same time. I think the human voice is the most powerfull instrument and the sound of so many voices singing simultaneously is truly amazing.

Tradition and present-day
When the Gregorian choral was invented, people didn’t know how to record music, so we don’t exactly know how the chants were orchestrated. However, the tradition of singing in churches survived through the ages… We thought that, since our singing style is similar, we would use the technology we have today and sing different songs. Even in other languages! So, if you have a good pop song with Latin lyrics, tell us and we’ll gladly record it!

Rules and innovations
The rules of the Gregorian choral are clearly stated and the original choral remains strictly fatefull to them. Fitting the music that we are currently playing to those rules would be really hard. But we do try to at least come close to the spirit of the choral – to sing in the right style and mood. Sometimes we change the style a bit, when we add a second voice, for example. I doubt that by doing this we’re breaking the rules, because as long as the voices are singing the same song, everything’s fine. The organum style of singing (in which there were two additional voices, one below and one above the main melody scale) was very popular in the Middle Ages. So double-voice singing is not breaking the rules…

A studio like a church
Today’s technology allows for wonderful things. The people who during our shows take care of the arrangements and sound do a fantastic job with the artificial echo on stage. Thanks to that, the sound is so great that you begin to wonder if you’re in a real church. Of course, we also sing in churches and the accoustics of those places definitely help the overall performance, but thanks to modern technology we don’t need that. On the other hand, we try to record in places in which the accoustics are similar to those in a church. Two of our recording studios were once churches… I remember our first recording session – we put candles all over the place to help recreate that specific atmosphere that one feels in a church.
A recording studio is, after all, a very bare place so while recording, we try to change its interior, so that it less resembles a cold and high-tech place. The songs which we can’t record in churches, we record in the studio. With the help of special equipment, we are now able to recreate church accoustics. Thanks to special proccessors, we can recreate not only the sound of a guitar or percussion, but also the sound of a specific place. Thanks to this we can have the accoustics of the Westminster Cathedral in every studio.

This has been sung before
For our project we pick songs from the 1960’s, 1970’s and 1980’s. In choosing the most appropriate song, we concentrate not on the arrangement or production, but on the melody and quality of a song… Listening to the music of the last fourty years, you realise that the greatest songs were released in the sixtees and seventees. In the 1980’s there aren’t as many good songs as in the previous two decades, and in the 1990’s you just have covers of old recordings. Earlier, the Beatles and ABBA made hits each week, right now things are different… Adapting good songs is a lot easier, simply because those songs are GOOD – you can play them on a guitar, an organ or a piano. Songs like that are also easier to sing. You were watching us – me and David – here in 30 Ton. We learned to talk with each other and we hope that you also managed to learn something…

on WLIW21 New York Public Television
with Richard Collier and Christopher Tickner LIVE in the studio!

Premieres nationwide on public television beginning Monday, February 26!
(check local listings)

The choir Gregorian Masters of Chant interprets modern pop songs in the style of the chants in a performance filmed live at the magnificent gothic Kreuzenstein Castle in Austria. Dressed in the robes of medieval monks and backed by a 29- piece orchestra, the choir’s haunting vocalizations against the dark and mystical castle backdrop bring an ages old sound into the modern musical landscape. Dramatic lighting and atmospheric dry ice, fire and mirrors combine with this ethereal sound to elevate a musical experiment from a curious concept to an incomparable artistic experience.

The choir performs Dire Straits’ “Brothers in Arms,” Eric Clapton’s “Tears In Heaven,” Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and “Scarborough Fair,” Elton John’s “Sacrifice,” David Bowie’s “Heroes,” Neil Diamond’s “Be,” Robbie Williams’ “Angels”and “Close My Eyes Forever,” originally performed by Ozzy Osbourne and Lita Ford. Guest vocalist Violet, sister of Sarah Brightman, joins the choir for “Moment of Peace.” The songs Gregorian performs are chosen carefully - 12-tone pop music must be translatable into the 7-tone scale of traditional Gregorian chants.

GREGORIAN LIVE is produced by Frank Peterson, who also introduced the unique sound of Enigma to pop music and produced Sarah Brightman’s popular PBS specials.

GREGORIAN – Christmas Chants

With over 3 million records sold, countless sold-out tours and more than twenty gold and platinum awards, Gregorian are regarded as one of the most successful musical groups of their genre.

After their 1999 debut "Masters Of Chant", the ten monks quickly became a big name on the contemporary pop scene – often copied, but never equalled. With "Gregorian: Christmas Chants", the Hamburg producer Frank Peterson adds a fascinating new chapter to the singing monks' successful collection, which has already won numerous gold and platinum awards. Their repertoire includes pure classic music ("Ave Maria"), English traditionals ("O Come All Ye Faithful", "The First Nowell"), the "Little Drummer Boy" (Bing Crosby/David Bowie), Andrew Lloyd Webber ("Pie Jesu"), "Child In A Manger" (which was made famous by Cat Stevens as "Morning Has Broken"), and modern writers. John Lennon's "Happy Xmas" is also included, as are Chris De Burgh's "A Spaceman Came Travelling”.

The musical interpretation is more classical than the previous Gregorian albums. The result is a relaxed, flowing vibe that is perfect for leisurely moments between church, unwrapping presents and Christmas dinner – including some nice surprises. "Happy Xmas" is an attractive meeting between the Gregorian monks and a children's choir. Only two musicians will accompany Gregorian on their Advent Tour of German churches, since no more are needed to support these moving voices live. The final concert will be three days before Christmas Eve.

The following Interview was held by Markus Zullner of gregorian-mu sic.de.gg and Frank Peterson in June 2006.

1. Does the singers of Gregorian change or are they the same since 1999?
Our singers are very busy beside Gregorian and for many other records they were used (Lord of The of the Rings, Harry Potter, Star Wars sound tracks). Many singers have a family too, so they can't come to every Gregorian-Activity. To the total choir belong 16 singers, so we can choose them if they are ready.

2. The album Sadisfaction from 1991, is it also from Gregorian?
Yes, my early work, directly after I came back from Ibiza to Hamburg. Since the single like that So Sad was a hit in many countries, the producer pushed me to have to place the album in only 12 days completely.

3. Is a Gregorian DVD planned again? (to the CD's Chapter IV, The Dark Side, Chapter V)
We plan a special and complex TV Special, which is to appear on DVD.

4. Gregorian already made a french song. Are new songs planed, who are in foreign languages (as on the 2. 3. and 4. CD)?
Maybe, the time will bring it we are planning songs in russian and french for our next album.

5. On the first album Chapter I in the track Don't give up I can here a breathing singing. Who is it?
Some say it would be Sarah Brightman other people are saying it would be one of the Sisters OF Oz. It could have been Sarah sounds a bit like her, doesn't it?

6. From where do the singers of Gregorian come?
They are all from England. In addition, we had a few german monks in the choire, who are sometimes on stage.

7. Where can I order a Gregorian fan article and is there a fan club?
There are fan articles, but the only way to buy them is on the concerts. We do not have a fan club. But there are many Gregorian Fansites.

8. Were Gregorian songs already used in films?
No, but we are keep working on it.

9. What does the original singers think about the Gregorian versions?
I heard that Richie Blackmore (Deep Purple) and Steve Lukather (Toto) were really happy about them. I gave a copy of Stairway ton of Heaven to Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin), but I'm still waiting for his answer. We have to ask the original singers for each song, because we need to have the license to copy them.

10. Does Gregorian produce a christmas-album in thee next time?
Maybe earlier than you may think.
